Te Rā Guided Experience

Experience a day filled with excitement, culture, and connection as you explore Te Whakarewarewa Geothermal Valley. Encounter our national treasure, the kiwi, and immerse yourself in Māori culture.

Discover awe-inspiring geysers, bubbling mud, and lush native bush during our guided Te Rā experience. Get up close to Pōhutu Geyser, the largest active geyser in the Southern Hemisphere.

Visit the kiwi in a specially designed nocturnal enclosure at the Kiwi Conservation Centre, dedicated to preserving this iconic bird.

Dive deeper into Māori heritage at the New Zealand Māori Arts and Crafts Institute, where students hone traditional skills in weaving, wood, stone and bone carving. Our wānanga (school) serves as a beacon for indigenous culture.

Our knowledgeable guides will share their Māori traditions and heritage with you, passing down ancestral stories and insights along the way.

Te Rā guided experience has a duration of 90 minutes.

We invite you to stay and continue enjoying the valley after your tour if time permits. You can watch another eruption of the geyser, re-visit the kiwi (Kiwi can be revisited with staff or on a tour; sightings can’t be guaranteed.) explore the marae, or relax with an inu (drink) or some kai (food) at our café or restaurant. You can also shop at Āhua Gallery or Oha Store. Many visitors choose to stay for at least 30 minutes after
their tour to capture the beauty of this special wāhi (place) through photographs.

Please note the for the 4pm tour visitors may not stay after their tour as we close the gates at 5:30pm

Please note that bookings must be made in advance, and are subject to availability and confirmation.

Please arrive 15 minutes before your experience time.

Entry into the valley is only via a guided tour.

Te Pō (Hāngī Dinner Buffet + Haka)

Experience a night that will enlighten you - see, hear and experience Māori culture with a cultural performance and hāngī buffet dinner.


Start your evening with a captivating cultural performance in our beautifully carved meeting house, Te Aronui a Rua. The performance includes a pōhiri (ceremonial Māori welcome), waiata (song), mōteatea (chant), poi, and haka.

Enjoy a stroll down to Pōhutu Geyser, the largest active geyser in the southern hemisphere and sip on hot chocolate.

Finally, savour a delicious hāngī buffet dinner at our Pātaka Kai Restaurant & Bar, which overlooks a geothermal wonderland. Enjoy freshly sourced produce, traditionally cooked meats and vegetables, kai moana (seafood), and a selection of sweet desserts.

This experience is approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes long and suitable for all ages.

Enjoy lunch at Te Puia with delicious kai set against a backdrop of geysers and stunning valley views at Pātaka Kai Restaurant.

The menu blends Māori flavours with global cuisines – from our popular corn and watercress soup with fresh homemade bread, to a crisp salad buffet, fresh kai moana, and hāngī meats cooked traditionally.

Our Hāngī Lunch Buffet runs daily from 11:30am to 2:00pm, with last seating at 1:00pm. Please note a 90-minute dining time applies from the start of your booking.

Bookings are essential, especially during peak times.

A unique dining experience to remember. Our cultural food and beverage experience at Pātaka Kai Restaurant & Bar, makes for a truly unforgettable feast.

Enjoy spectacular geothermal views while enjoying a range of delicious New Zealand flavours.

The menu is smartly sophisticated – infusing Māori flavours, with an array of global cuisines and cooking styles. Indulge in lamb, chicken and vegetables cooked in a hāngī, served alongside mānuka smoked salmon and ham, oysters and mussels, finishing with a delectable dessert buffet.

Bookings are essential – we often book out quickly during peak times. Buffet dinner is served daily with two sittings at 5:30pm and 7:15pm. A 90-minute dining time applies.
